Norfolk Sister Cities, in partnership with the Tidewater African Cultural Alliance (TACA), presents Afro MANIA Ghana: A Cultural Experience on Saturday, March 8, 12-3 p.m., at the historic Attucks Theatre, located at 1010 Church Street in Norfolk! Space is limited so register today for this free celebration of Ghanaian culture geared towards children in kindergarten through 8th grade and above, and the community at large. Children must be accompanied by adults.
*11:30 a.m.-12 p.m. Check-in for those registered
*12-2 p.m. Interactive Workshops: Registration is limited to the 1st 200 people. Workshops include dancing, drumming, storytelling, and crafts. There will also be a chance to get a taste of delicious, authentic Ghanaian cuisine from Yendidi Restaurant‘s chef and owner, Josephine “Abena” Oteng-Appiah.
*2-3 p.m. Cultural Presentations: Registration is limited to the those attending the workshops, plus space for an additional 400 people! There will be dance, drumming, and fashion representing various regions of Ghana. Performers and presenters include TACA’s Dance Ensemble & Drummers; Drum Instructor Ricky Micou with Frederick Ainoo, Norfolk State University (NSU) Percussion Professor & Local Ghanaian drumming enthusiast; Dance Instructor Stephany Ursula Yamoah, Artistic Director, National Dance Ensemble of Ghana; and Rita Addico Cohen, Ghanaian Storyteller/Performer Artist.
Prizes! Those who attend all of the workshops and presentations will be eligible for raffled gift cards donated by community supporters. The raffle will take place prior to the event’s conclusion.
