Tema, Ghana

Tema, Ghana, Africa became Norfolk’s 9th Sister City in December 2010. Tema has a population of 210,000 and is located in the Greater Accra region that compares to the population of Hampton Roads with 1.5 million. We share cultural connections, geographic similarities as well as English as the official and commercial language. As the majority of African Americans originated in West Africa, Ghana represents an important reconnection portal. Tema Port has become an ideal port for the handling of transit cargo for the landlocked countries of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger. Ghana is considered the most politically and economically stable country on the continent of Africa.
