Young Artists & Authors Showcase

Norfolk Sister City Association

The 2019 Theme: Global Citizens: Resilient Communities

The Young Artists and Authors Showcase (YAAS) encourages youth from around the globe to express the mission of Sister Cities International through original artwork, literature, film, and photography. Students from national and international sister city member communities interpret an annual theme and send their work to Washington, DC where a panel of judges selects Grand Prize Winners and Finalists based on originality, composition, and theme interpretation. After the finalists for art, literature, film, and photography are announced, the works go on a yearlong tour hosted by local sister city programs on a monthly basis, and the grand prize winners receive $1000 each.

2019 Theme: Global Citizens: Resilient Communities
Sister Cities International promotes peace through mutual respect, understanding, and cooperation – one individual, one community at a time.

Resilience refers to how well an individual or community can prepare for adversity or challenges.

  • How can future global leaders prepare their communities to respond to the global challenges of the 21st century?
  • How does international experience affect an individual or community’s ability to adapt?
  • What are examples of resilience in a global context?

This year’s theme asks students to explore these questions by highlighting citizen diplomacy and the creative ways that we create peace through people-to-people interaction.

The deadline to submit entries to Sister Cities International is April 1, 2019
